Considering these humorous, radical alternatives to online dating, makes signing up for a free trial membership in a dating service look mighty good to most singles right about now.
In a world where it sometimes seems like everyone has found their perfect soul mate, some of us single men and single women are just plain desperate to find our own life companion. But what is considered going too far in the quest for coupledom?
The old fashioned methods of introducing yourself to a cute stranger or meeting through friends seems to have gone out the window as we get less confident and more reliant on technology. The other day on the morning news, I saw a true segment about a single Oregon woman who dialed 911 in order to ask the operator to give her phone number to a cop she had recently seen in her area. Now the desperate single woman is in trouble with the law and instead of a date for dinner with the hot cop, she has a court date set. Okay, so she probably shouldn’t have called 911 to get the cute single cop’s information, but in her mind, maybe her 45 years of single life qualified as an actual emergency.
She deserves to find someone to be happy with just as much as the next single girl. At only thirty-three years old, most of my friends are very happily in serious relationships. So I can only imagine how a 45-year-old woman feels living the solo life. Maybe all of her friends are married and she’s sick of cooking for one and sleeping alone with no one to snuggle with. So she figured, what can it hurt to call the man’s place of business and hunt down this potential soul mate? But rather than ask the man his name when he was at her building, she waited until he left and then dialed 911. How can she ever expect to find a man if she can’t even talk face to face with one?
Back in the day, there were many excellent ways singles could go about looking for love such as introducing one's self to the cute girl you sit next to in class, or smiling at a stranger on the street. These days though, things have changed and many have resorted to meeting people through various methods that no doubt end up giving singles the label of “creep” or “desperate.” Calling 911 to find out that hot cop’s name probably isn’t the best idea out there and may result in making you look a bit suspect to your crush and others.
Visitors of the ever popular website Craigslist.com may be familiar with the “missed connections” section of the site. This is the area where singles can write messages to others such as “You: about 35, blonde hair, on the green line daily at 8:30 a.m. Me: 40, bald, notice you and your amazing smile everyday. Care to meet up sometime for a drink?” Not only do these single posters probably earn themselves the label of “desperate” but they earn the far worse description of “desperate wusses.”
Come on man, you see the single girl on the train everyday; why can’t you say hi to her? Or smile at the very least? Does it really make sense to post an ad telling her you notice her? Why not show her instead? And what happens if the girl actually answers? Do the two of you talk on the train the next day? And if you do start a fruitful lasting relationship do you say to your future children when they ask how you met, “well, your daddy was a wuss and posted a missed connections about me on the ever popular Craigslist.”
I admit I do on occasion check the missed connections. But I always wonder what I would do if I did in fact find one about myself. I’d be too embarrassed to admit that I actually look on the site and therefore could never answer the ad. I have to wonder, do these things ever work?
Why are we singles so desperate to be in relationships that we reach these lows? Is it really that difficult to say hi to the cute girl or guy you walk by on the street? If we’re interested in someone, we should take the opportunity to let them know in a straightforward manner without making fools of ourselves. There’s no need to publish an online posting about a hot girl you see everyday, and certainly no need to call 911.
Part of the beauty of starting a new relationship is putting yourself out there and taking a chance. And when it works out it’s a beautiful thing. And when it doesn’t, you look for another opportunity. Like the arrested Oregon woman says, “Heck, it doesn't come very often a good man comes to your doorstep.” So, take advantage of the opportunity; don’t wait until your single status becomes an emergency and certainly don’t miss any connections out there. Join a few online dating services and actually use them on a regular basis.
